2009-2010 European Champions League

This is strictly about the year's Champions League compeition. The first round is usually boring though, it really gets good during the next round, anyways this round has had some good games.. and some boring games. So far, I though Barcelona vs Inter would be great but they played to a dull 0-0 draw.

A fun game to watch would be AC Milan vs Real Madrid, they share the history of having the 1st and 2nd most Champions League trophies of all time, and Kaka will be playing his former team. the ageless Inzaghi is taking up the place of the lost Kaka, and he's not bad. Got 2 goals in his first champions league action since 2007.

Real Madrid is strong though, they blew out the last team they played 5-2. But you know what the story behind Real Madrid is, whenever they face Serie A, the defense shuts them down. I'm probably still going to have to say Real should take this one. as much as the Serie A defense can shut down big players such as Kaka and C. Ronaldo, Dida and Abbiati are not great enough to make that game saving stop.

The games that are supposed to be the biggest games in years e.g. Inter vs Barca, Milan vs Madrid are usually dull affairs. They are just both too scared to go for it against eachother and risk loss, so they both usually shut up shot and are happy with a draw or nicking a win. Especially in the group stage when they will both get through anyway.

I think Real are extremely powerful, but there is a lot of pressure on them to win. If they don't then they have no justification for spending so much money on their team. Barca have less pressure which could work in their favour. Nobody expects them to better the treble that they achieved last season. Chelsea are also looking strong, but the transfer ban could hinder their progress if they have long-term injuries and can't replace them in January. There is also pressure on Ancelotti to win as he was brought in purely as a 'European Coach'. Then there are a host of other teams that could win; Man U, Liverpool, Juventus, Inter, Milan and even Lyon and Wolfsburg as dark horses. They're all going to be contenders.

Inter should be a top favorite up there with Man U, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Not only are they the best team in Italy, but they have the paper names to prove it. Although Inter always chokes in Champions League, they also don't win enough in the group stage. The furthest I remember them making it, was to the semi finals in 2003... and they were half as good as they are now!

Damn Remember in 2004 though, a little off topic but there's nothing else to talk about. Out of nowhere Porto and Monaco played in the finals!

Yeah that was a weird Champions League. There were a lot of high scoring games too, I remember Monaco beating Deportivo 8-3 and Juventus beating Olympiakos 7-0. And the quarter-finals when Milan beat Deportive 4-1 only to lose 4-0 in the return leg lol I don't think we'll get a smaller iwnner of the competition for a long time, although that's not to say it'll never happen again.

Champions League Final 1999 will always be the best one. Ole Ole Ole >_>

Anyway, I agree with the statement that the top clubs pitted against each other are usually extremely dull affairs, however, it depends what stage of the competition. If it's like Barcalona vs Manchester United in the final like last year, it's dull but god is it stressful to watch if you're a fan of one of the clubs. Not least if they end up losing v___v though, it's good if they win. One of my favourite memories was the Champions League 2 years ago when Man Utd beat Chelsea on penalties. I couldn't even watch it was so tense and then Nicolas Anelka missed and my Dad and I started shouting our heads off with happiness XD

That said though, the Champions League is formiddable. Even if you have great names signed up like many top european teams do, you can be put up against it by a total mish-mash of players that wouldnt be concidered as good as the individuals on certain sides. A prime example is the Champions League 1999 Man Utd team. They had people like Dennis Irwin, Ronny Jonsen, Jesper Blomqvist, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Andy Cole playing. Nobody would class any of those players in the same league as Oliver Kahn, Jens Jeremies, Mehmet Scholl, Mario Basler and Carsten Jancker whom they were up against (who were world class players at the time), and they came out on top. The same with teams like Monaco and Porto coming out of nowhere. They might not have a paper full of big names, but they can do some real damage sometimes if the chemestry is right.

AC Milan lost 1-0 to a decent Udinesse side in Serie A. That's no good, soon they have to play the great Real Madrid squad, they gotta play better. Man U has been playing great soccer in the EPL, same can be said for Chelsea, although Chelsea have not had a good test yet. Although I guess you can't judge a great domestic league to the CL. Inter's on a 4 year streak and haven't won the CL since the 60's, Liverpool has never won the EPL, and have won the CL..

Btw, has anyone checked the Serie A standings? Until last week Sampdoria has not lost a game, they lost to Fiorentina this Wednesday, but you can't expect miracles when a team plays 3 games in four days!

Btw, Chelsea lost 3-1 to Wigan the other day... so they've been outdone by the underdog already and they were playing one of their better squads. Their transfer ban seems like it's going to do Chelsea a world of pain if that keeps happening.

Manchester United however do look very promising. Last season they said it was the best Manchester United squad they'd seen, and they lost appaulingly to Barcalona in the champions league final. At the time I knew we weren't the best team we'd had because personally, I hated the likes of Christiano Ronaldo and didn't think much of Tevez, who were the players the commentators talked most about, but this year, I feel the team has actually improved somewhat. Fletcher is playing brilliantly as of late, when a couple of years back he was awful, and Ryan Giggs has turned into some kind of magic man. In the previous win on Saturday, Man Utd weren't playing well due to Nani's incompetance, he was subbed for Ryan Giggs and immediately they scored, with Giggs setting the goal up, and then again, with Giggs assisting yet again. Im feeling good this season lol.

Other than that, Im looking forward to seeing how Real Madrid play with their new players because I've not managed to see a game yet. They seem to have reverted back into the squad of super players they had at the beginning of the decade. Roberto Carlos, Figo and Zidane, but this time it's Kaka, Ronaldo and Benzema.

Fiorentina are a force to be reckoned with now. After 2 consecutive sloppy contests, they turned everything around by defeating the Serie A leaders of Sampdoria, then defeating the great Liverpool yesterday, both by scores of 2-0.

Seems the giants are falling, AC Milan lost another one, this time in front of their fans vs the decent Zurich squad.

Man U had a scare against Wolfsburg, they needed to fight back to earn their 2-1 victory.

Well you say a force to be reckoned with, but like you said; they've had two sloppy contests and two good victories. On that evidence surely they should now go ahead and have two sloppy contests :P They'll be a force to be reckoned with if they reach the last 16/quarter finals of the Champions League and finish in the top 3 in Serie A, mounting a decent title challenge.

I was quite outraged (prbably too strong a word :P but it'll do) when I read the back of an english newspaper saying Man U were spared embarassment when they came from behind to beat Wolfsburg. How arrogant are they about the Premiership's stature that it would be embarassing for Man U to draw against the German champions who have a great team and arguably the best strike force in Europe?

I think Liverpool's group will be the most interesting to watch. And you can be almost sure that the one of those teams will be a semi finalist at the Europa Cup this year :P.

Btw I think Fiorentina is currently 3rd in Serie A. Wait lemme think..

1)Sampdoria
2)Juventus
3)Fiorentina
4)Inter

Is that right.. lol

Close, it's:

1. Sampdoria
2. Juventus
3. Inter
4. Fiorentina

But you're only 6 games in. There have been a lot of 1 nil victories and a 3-1 loss to Roma. I don't think they've been convincing, that's not to say they won't be in the top 4, but they aren't a force yet, far from it. Like I said, I'll be convinced if they make it past the group stage or further and finish top 3 in Serie A. I agree that Liverpool's group will be an entertaining one, although not if we're knocked out :P But I think the team who finish third (either Fiorentina or Lyon :P) will be a decent bet to win the Europa League.

Who does everybody think will be the dark horses this year?

Liverpool always make hard work of the group stages and then become contenders in the knockout rounds. Lyon have a real strong team and could do some damage this year. Sevilla are another strong team that will do well.

That loss to Roma was the a sloppy contest I was reffering to. The coach must have got them together somehow, it's always an improvment when you go from loosing to good teams, only to wake up the next morning and defeat good teams.

Don't fogrget, Fiorentina was missing Gilardino during the Liverpool match, they should look better when their best player comes back. Defeating the best team in the group always takes some dirt off your shoulders as well. Even though it's a 1-0, it's still big. You take a win as they come.

It's very hard for a dark horse to get anywhere near winning the Champions League, although this year it may very well be Bayern Munich. They might surprise even one of the great EPL teams during the second round, asumming they make it to the second round.

btw who else is surprised by Sampdoria's recent reassuregence on Serie A's lead for the first time in 19 years.

I sense some sarcasm here lol But you can't argue that EPL teams are the most feared at this moment in time, like Spanish teams were in the late 90s/early 00s and Italian teams were in the late 80s/early 90s.

I am surprised about Sampdoria, although it is only 6 games in as I said, but shouldn't that be discussed in the general UEFA topic :P What I like about them is the fact that they're full of unwanted players such as Cassano, who's always been an awesome player but just misunderstood.

Yo

None of the EPL teams will have any problem qualifying, Liverpool like to make things hard for themselves but I doubt they'll have any major problems. Real Madrid look strong,

In 7 games, Ronaldo has scored 9.

I was impressed by APOEL when they played Chelsea, although Chelsea never went up a gear APOEL played some great passing football.

Except Arsenal is struggling this season so far, even for a EPL team. They no where to be found on the Premiership short list standings, and they've had to struggle in their 1st CL game, despite winning it. They've also struggled in last year's CL, against a decent Roma squad that almost beat them, if it weren't for that dissallowed (clean) goal.

I would be surprised if Barcelona looses a game to be honest, they're to strong this season. Even if they're in a group with Inter, whom desperatley needs to win a match, much more than Barcelona. Inter won't beat them, Inter is slightly overrated. Despite winning the Serie A 4 times in a row.. 2 of those which weren't even won fair and square (scandal remember). Inter is good for blasting away at the low league Serie A teams..(Serie B teams basically) then when they play big teams like Barca and Man U they're desperate for the tie.

Btw, Wolfsburg sucks this year! The newspaper was right, but that's Bundesliga man. Unless your team is not Bayern Munich, you will never see consistency.
